6 Steps to Safe Gait Belt Use 1. Proper Patient Positioning

Have the patient sit upright on the edge of the bed or chair with feet flat on the floor.

This seated position provides the best leverage for safe standing assistance.

2. Belt Placement & Clearance

Wrap the belt around the patient’s midsection, over clothing. Crucially, ensure the belt does not interfere with any medical tubes or wires; tuck the belt beneath them if necessary.

3. Establish Fit & Tension

Thread the strap until the belt is snug. Check the fit: two fingers should slide comfortably beneath the belt.

4. Secure the Buckle

Engage the buckle by pulling the strap through the locking teeth. This prevents slipping and ensures maximum stability and security.

5. Eliminate Tripping Hazards

Tuck the excess strap end securely into the belt. This prevents the loose material from becoming a dangerous tripping hazard.

6. Ready for Transfer Action

Grasp the belt from underneath with a firm, underhand grip. Gain maximum control and stability to assist the patient in all movements.
